CAMP WANATACHI is going Off-Broadway!

We are thrilled about our upcoming run at La MaMa Experimental Theater Club in January. Honored with over thirty Obie Awards and dozens of Drama Desk and Villager Awards, La MaMa has an incredible roster of theater, movie and multi-media luminaries for whom La MaMa was an early artistic home. In fact, Blue Man Group, co-founded by our producer Ian Pai, began at La MaMa ETC!

CAMP WANATACHI vocodes and auto-tunes the voices of Broadway stars in new musical!

Something has happened since Carolyn Mignini’s days in the original Broadway productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Tintypes — her voice sounds a lot more like T-Pain.

CAMP WANATACHI, a new musical about two 13 year old girls who fall in love at Christian summer camp, is turning musical theater on its head with its dynamic new utilization of thick beats and pop music technology. Long seen as sworn enemies, musical theater nerds and hip hop heads can now come together on June 3rd and June 4th when an abridged version of CAMP WANATACHI is performed at 3 Legged Dog Art + Technology Center.

Ms. Mignini isn’t the only Broadway star to get the vocoder treatment. Alice Lee, who stared in the Tony Award winning Broadway cult sensation Spring Awakening, has also joined the CAMP WANATACHI cast. The unique blend electronically processed vocals with unaffected “musical theater” singing hits just the right note when atop of CAMP WANATACHI’s signature electro-funk and lush orchestral arrangements.

Music Directed and arranged by up and coming new classical music composer Conrad Winslow, a Julliard grad student currently under the tutelage of Academy Award winning composer John Corigliano, Mr. Winslow has merged his penchant for  “harmonic thorniness and rhythmic vitality”  (New York Times) with his love for electronic dance music in his compositions for CAMP WANATACHI. Also acting as conductor and a live DJ, Mr. Winslow’s arrangements for his 7 piece orchestral ensemble hearken the undulating repetition of Phillip Glass, the glitchy specificity of Alarm Will Sound and the electronic/emotional consciousness of Nico Muhly.

Written and composed by indie rocker Natalie Weiss of Unicornicopia and featuring beats by hip hop producer Machinedrum, CAMP WANATACHI began as an experimental DJ set/monologue cycle performed by enthusiast hipsters alongside of noise bands in Williamsburg basements. As the project developed, it began to share bills with established artists such as Dave Longstreth of Dirty Projectors.

Now, under the direction of Matt Cowart (Co-Producer/Associate Director of Sondheim: the birthday concert with the New York Philharmonic), CAMP WANATACHI has transformed into a vibrant, boundary breaking piece of musical theater that is sure to become a Broadway hit.
